In the vibrant culinary landscape of Auckland, where dining experiences range from fine dining to casual bites, one humble dish has risen above many others, to claim its rightful place in the hearts and stomachs of locals and visitors alike! Nestled on the picturesque shores of Waiheke Island, ‘The Local Seafood Restaurant & Bar’ has emerged victorious, clinching the prestigious title of “Best Snapper and Chips” in the esteemed ‘Iconic Auckland Eats: The Top 100 Dishes’ awards.

The culinary journey of ‘The Local’ is a testament to the passion and dedication of its founders, Simon and Sara, who along with their talented chef Gustavo and team, have crafted an experience that celebrates the rich bounty of New Zealand’s contemporary, gourmet food. While serving up popular kiwi classics, the award winning seafood dishes are now taking the restaurant to the next level. The Local has become a beloved destination, drawing patrons from far and wide to savour the delectable offerings and to marvel in the wide and expansive sea views offered while eating on the covered, outdoor terrace.

Upon receiving the coveted award, Simon and Sara expressed their overwhelming pride and gratitude. “We are absolutely thrilled to be recognized for our Snapper and Chips,” Simon beamed. “It’s a dish that embodies the essence of coastal dining here on Waiheke Island, and we’re honoured to have it celebrated among the top culinary experiences in Auckland.”

The Local has won this award before too – once in 2021 and now in 2024. At the heart of The Local’s success lies their commitment to sourcing the best ingredients and ensuring each dish is crafted with precision and care. Chef Gustavo’s culinary prowess shines through in every bite, elevating the humble Snapper and Chips to new heights of gastronomic delight. From the crisp golden batter enveloping the succulent fillet to the perfectly seasoned chips, to the deliciously fresh coleslaw, every element of the dish harmonises to create a symphony of flavours that dance on the palate.

The Local – Snapper ‘n’ Chips

Awarded by Henri Smith

The dish I am nominating as an Iconic Auckland Eat is the ‘snapper n’ chips’ from The Local on Waiheke Island. We are so lucky to have access to such delicious, locally caught fish and The Local prepares the freshest produce better than anyone else. Light and crispy beer battered snapper is paired with thick cut Makikihi chips and a zingy slaw which balances the dish beautifully. A real selling point for me is that The Local make all their condiments in house and are some of the best I have ever encountered. Their tartare is no exception and is the perfect accompaniment to the dish. It’s not just the delicious food that makes this an iconic dish, but the experience that goes with it. Sitting on the deck overlooking the beautiful Oneroa Bay while enjoying a glass of local wine is what it’s all about. The owners Simon and Sara are incredible hosts. Welcoming, attentive and always up for a laugh, they make us feel like we are one of the family when we come in for a meal. To me this dish is an elevated interpretation of the Kiwi classic while staying true to its roots and we will be back time and time again to enjoy it.
